Oloron Sainte Marie
Capital of the Haut Bearn, Oloron Sainte Marie is in the heart of the Pyrenees, next to the Spanish border and the Basque Country and in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
Strategically placed where two "gaves" (local rivers) meet, Oloron is one of the important stops used by the pilgrims on their trails to Santiago. It also has numerous churches, a beautiful XIIth century cathedral, many old traditions, hosts an international festival and is well known for its garbure soup.
This quaint two thousand year old city, with its 12 000 inhabitants, was awarded recognition by the Culture and Communication Ministry as a town of Art and History. This prize is given to towns which want to preserve and share their historical values.
But Oloron is also definitely turned towards Europe and the world and is already a very active town. Landing systems for aircrafts made by Messier-Dowty, delicious Lindt chocolates, berets and glamorous hats from Beatex and Souviron Palas or Lartigues fabrics are as many examples to show the dynamism of Oloron.
Don't wait, come and discover its fabulous sites and monuments, its delis or even the picturesque doors which make its winding little streets so special.
